Having qualified in 1991 from the University of Dundee, Dr Hamilton began specialist radiology training in September 1997 in Sheffield. From 2002-3 he was Fellow in Cardiac Radiology at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester (a large regional cardiothoracic centre) before moving to New Zealand where he was a Fellow in Cardiac Radiology from 2003-5 at the internationally renowned Greenlane and Auckland City Hospitals. Before radiology training Dr Mark Hamilton spent two years as a Cardiology Registrar in a very busy district general hospital where he gained excellent experience in clinical cardiology.
During my fellowships Dr Hamilton obtained wide experience in cardiac imaging and received training in nuclear cardiology, cardiac catheterisation, echocardiography, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. This experience and training covered all aspects of congenital and acquired heart disease in adults and children and there are very few doctors with this breadth of experience and expertise in the world.
From 2005 Dr Mark Hamilton was the regional lead for cardiac CT and cardiac MRI for adult and paediatric heart disease, a position he was delighted to be able to share with Dr Manghat after his appointment in 2009.
Currently secretary to the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging Dr Mark Hamilton regularly lectures on cardiac imaging at national societies, and reviews academic papers for scientific journals. He also contributes to guidelines for the investigation of cardiac disease for the Royal College of Radiologists and for chest pain for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). Dr Hamilton is also an active researcher with particular interest in cardiovascular physiology and with Dr Manghat coordinates an active training program in cardiac imaging for junior doctors.
